BSP-MVZ Internship

"I really appreciate the learning environment and friendliness of the staff and researchers."

Still wondering if the internship is right for you? Ask a fellow BSPer that has been involved!

Comments and Experiences of some BSPers who've been involved in the museum (2006-2007)...

Natalie J. Levy was involved in the BSP internship program during the fall 2006 and spring 2007. She took the "General Comparison and Diversity in Vertebrate Anatomy" course in the fall of 2006 and then went on to take the "Natural History of the Vertebrates" course and worked on AmphibiaWeb in the Spring of 2007 before she graduated.

What did she feel she got out of her MVZ experience?
"So much knowledge about vertebrate natural history, morphology, and conservation. And what a great community!"

Noel Carrillo was involved in the BSP internship program during the Fall 2006 and Spring 2007. He took the "General Comparison and Diversity in Vertebrate Anatomy" course in the fall of 2006, and then continued the internship in the Spring by working in the MVZ Evolutionary Genetics Lab. He will continue his involvement in the Fall of 2007.

"Taking the MVZ-BSP class was one of the most exciting things I've done at Cal. This class helped me learn so much about the anatomy and physiology of animals. This was a class like no other that taught me so much and that I'm sure will help me in medical school or graduate school. As for my job in the Genetics lab, I also learned so much about the way the lab is run and it has given me an advantage in my biology classes because I'm familiar with the equipment and materials used in the lab. I recommend the internships and jobs offered at the MVZ as a great way to learn more about biology."

Christina Moore was involved in the BSP internship program during the Fall 2006. She took the "General Comparison and Diversity in Vertebrate Anatomy" course, and used it to refine her interests in biology. Her experience at the MVZ helped lead her to a summer research program at The University of California, San Diego (STARS) in 2007.

"A great learning experience! The library research gave me
a basic foundation for the vast diversity of vertebrates that I was able
to expand upon while doing hands-on dissections and preparations."

Linda Weingarten became involved in the museum in the fall of 2006 after she graduated from UC Berkeley. She was looking to gain more experience in laboratory work, and gain additional job skills in biology. She worked in the MVZ Preparation Lab and necropsied over 30 mammals, preparing them as skeletons for the research collection over the fall of 2006 and the spring of 2007. She then went on to manage the IB teaching collection during the summer of 2007, organizing and inventoring hundreds of birds and mammals and managing four students. She continues to enjoy her volunteer time at the MVZ and hopes to begin a project in the fall involving the Preparation Lab again.

"I learned so much while working in the prep lab! Monica is a very patient teacher. The MVZ is the most incredible place in the university (I am biased towards biology), and I am very pleased to be associated with it."

Holvis Delgadillo became involved in the MVZ when he took "Ornithology" in the spring of 2007. During that class, he joined a team of students that decided to prepare an articulated ostrich skeleton for the museum as a class project. They brought in a 300 pound ostrich and over the semester managed to reduce it to a pile of bones weighing no more than 20 pounds! They will continue the process of constructing a full posed skeleton in the fall of 2007.

" The BSP-MVZ internship was an unforgettable experience.  I made new friends and gained valuable knowledge from working in the MVZ prep-lab. I will carry the appreciation of the time I spent there for the rest of my life.  I encourage all BSPers to apply for the internship.  It will be out of this world. "
