Cal Day 2018

On April 21st, the MVZ hosted another spectacular program on Cal Day! As the one day of the year that the MVZ is open to the public, Cal Day gives the Cal community and general public the chance to see the museum’s specimens and the research being done here. We are proud to say that the MVZ is one of the most popular exhibits on campus and that people are always eager to see what we have to offer. This year we had a grand total of 2532 visitors.

Every Cal Day we present an array of engaging displays and educational activities. The beautiful displays featuring bird, amphibian, reptile, and mammal specimens attracted many eyes. Additionally we had numerous live herps courtesy of Papaya Pythons and tuco-tucos courtesy of Eileen Lacey and Shannon O’Brien, which were a big source of excitement for the visitors.

Visitors were drawn to our Eco-Origami demonstration by MVZ Alum Bernie Peyton, Reptile Dissection led by Prep Lab Manager Terri Barclay, and AmphibiaWeb exhibit headed by Ann Chang and Michelle Koo. The MVZ also collaborated with some of the other BNHMs (UC Museum of Paeontology, Essig Museum of Entomology, and the UC Botanical Garden), the Integrative Biology Department, and the UC Natural Reserve System on displays in the VLSB Courtyard for "Natural History up Close". This year, the MVZ’s Courtyard Display centered on “Diversity in Vertebrates -- a Trip Around the Globe" and was created by our Cal Day Preparator Florine Pascal.

Cal Day would not be possible without the incredible amount of support from the MVZ community. We are extremely grateful for all the hard work from the MVZ faculty, staff, postdocs, graduate, and undergraduate students as well as its volunteers in generating exhibit content for the gallery, pulling specimens from the collection, assisting in setting up displays, and taking them down, as well as for volunteering on Cal Day itself for set-up, exhibit monitoring, demos, and clean-up. Thank you to everyone for making this another amazing Cal Day!
