Hastings Natural History Reservation is a biological field station administered by the MVZ and UC Natural Reserve System. The 2,275 acre former ranch in Upper Carmel Valley, Monterey County, California, was donated to UC by Frances Simes Hastings in 1937, as a place for university-level research and teaching. Hastings thus includes many long-term studies and ecological data sets. In 1965, Hastings became one of the original reserves in the UC Natural Reserve System. Hastings offers typical oak woodlands, riparian areas, chaparral and grasslands found in the Santa Lucia Mountains of the Central Interior Coast ranges of California. Over 500 papers have been published based on field research done at Hastings. From 10-40 people are resident at Hastings at any time, in facilities including independent cabins, modern labs, a classroom with T1 internet connectivity with wireless coverage.
