Doing Natural History

The Journey of an Animal in the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology

MVZ floorplan

Natural history museums are known for exciting public displays of exotic creatures, but they are also important research institutions. This exhibit introduces natural history research by tracing the path of specimens from the field, to the museum, and into scientific publications. Focusing on Berkeley’s Museum of Vertebrate Zoology during the past century, this site allows you to learn how mammals, birds, salamanders, and reptiles have become a part of the museum’s collections, and see what they have taught us about evolution.
